| Term | Definition |
| resource | something that we use; it fills a need that helps us function and go about our daily lives. |
| natural resource | a resource that is provided to us by "Mother Nature" or the Earth. |

| renewable resource | replaces itself unless it is overused. If we use it carefully and wisely it will be replenished by the processes of nature. |
| example of renewable resources | animal, plant life, frewh water (streams, ponds, lakes, and rivers). |
| nonrenewable resource | natural resource existing in fixed amounts. |
| fixed | limited, once used it can not be used again. |
| example of nonrenewable resource | fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas), and minerals. |
| perpetual resources | have plenty and they are inexhaustible |
| example of perpetual resources | sunlight, wind, geothermal heat (geysers) and tides |
| harvest | collect |
| recycle | a product or resource can be reused |
| reprocessed | a used resource can be made into something different so it can be used again. |
| example of things that can be recycled or reprocessed | metals, aluminum, some plastic products. |
| reuse | a resource we can use and reuse with little or no change. |
| example of something reused | when you refill a water container. |
| sustainable resource | a resource that is used up at the same speed that it is renewed (replanting trees, animals reproduce)....it replaces itself. |
