Term | Definition |
operations | Mathematical processes. The most common are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. |
addition | The process of calculating the sum of two or more numbers. |
subtraction | The process of calculating the difference of two or more numbers. |
multiplication | The process of combining numbers to find the product. Repeated addition of numbers. |
division | The process of separating a number into equal groups to find a quotient. Repeated subtraction of numbers. |
array | Arrangement of items in rows and columns, representing a number. |
factors | Numbers multiplied to get the product. |
product | The result of two or more factors. The answer to a multiplication problem. |
quotient | The result of a number being divided. The answer to a division problem. |
divisor | The number by which the divididend is to be divided. The number of groups the dividend is to be separated. |
dividend | A number to be divided by the divisor. |
remainder | The left over amount in a division problem. |
compatible numbers | Numbers that work together well and can be calculated easily mentally. |
area model | Using length and width (a rectangle or square) to represent a problem. |
algorithm | The standard process to solve. |
approximate | Using numbers close to the actual number. |
rounding | A method to shorten numbers, and make calculations easier, usually ending in zeros. |
equation | States that two things are equal, uses an equal sign. |
expression | A number sentence that may not use an equal sign. |
multiple | A number that can be divided by another number without a remainder. Skip counting. |
prime number | Can only be divided evenly by 1 and itself. |
composite | Can be divided evenly by other numbers, not just 1 and itself. |
