| Immigration | to change residence from a country to begin living permanently in another country |
| Emigration | to leave one’s own country to settle permanently in another |
| Push Factor | factors that trigger out-migration. These factors may be cultural, political, economic, or environmental. |
| Pull Factor | factors that attract people to a place. These factors may be cultural, political, economic, or environmental. |
| Chain Migration | migration of people to a specific location because relatives or members of the name nationality previously migrated there |
| Voluntary Migration | type of migration in which people choose to leave |
| Forced Migration | type of migration in which people leave because of war, natural disaster, and government |
| Refugee | people who flee a place to escape persecution or disaster |
| Hierarchical Diffusion | the spread of an idea from a person of power to other people or large city to smaller city |
| Relocation Diffusion | the spread of an idea through the physical movement of people |
| Contagious Diffusion | the rapid spread of an idea throughout a population (usually spreads through media) |
