| Term | Definition |
| Dendrite | Receive impulses from other nerve cells |
| Soma | Contains the genetic instructions for the function of the cell |
| Axon | Carries the cell's impulse through its length |
| Terminal | Spreads the cell's impulse out to reach other neurons |
| Axon Hillock | Joins the soma and axon to collect the impulses before sending one down the cell |
| Schwann Cell/ Myelin Sheath | Surrounds some neurons to increase how efficiently it can carry an impulse |
| Action Potential | Electrical impulse that tells the cell to communicate with another neuron Caused by the flow of negative and positive ions in and outof the neuron |
| Depolarization | Stimulus causes Sodium ions flood into the cell, reducing the resting potential |

| Absolute Refractory Period | During an action potential, No second AP is able to be produced no matter how strong the stimulus |
| Relative Refractory Period | Another AP can be produced only if the stimulus is greater than the threshold stimulus |
| Synapse | Point of impulse transmission between neurons |
| Excitatory Neurotransmitters | Neurotransmitters that make the membrane potential less negative - stimulate the postysynaptic membrane |
| Inhibitory Neurotransmitters | Neurotransmitters that make the membrane potential more negative - inhibit the transmission of an impulse |
| Temporal Summation | Transmission of an impulse by rapid stimulation of one or more presynaptic neurons |
| Spatial summation | Transmission of an impulse by simultaneous or nearly simultaneous stimulation of two or more presynaptic neurons |
