why would the union army need to resupply Fort Sumter?	they need to resupply because they are surronded because there on a island. they would have to stay there for a while so they would need more food, water, and weapons to survive.
what advantages would a floating battery have?	it gets little damage and it moves in the water so it's hard to aim at it.
what are the border states?	wedged between the north and south. the states were DE, MD, KY, and MO. no slave states were border states.
north's advantages:	population, railroad miles, factories, more developed economy, and exports.
south's advantages:	strong military, good officers into battle, strategic, didn't need to travel huge distances, made it difficult for north to cross the wilderness, and more familiar with the area.
why did the south's exports decrease?	because of the union blockade by the anaconda plan.
who is Winfield Scott?	he developed a two part strategy for the union.
what was the two part plan?	destroy the south's economy by a blockade and then gain control of the Mississippi river to divide the south.
what's the Cotton Diplomacy?	this was the idea that Great Britain would support the confederacy because it needed the south's raw cotton to supply the booming textile industry.
what did they do to prepare for war?	raise money for aids, emergency hospital, volunteers send medicine, bandages, and food.
what did the union and confederates lack of?	they lacked clothing, food, rifles, and uniforms
what was the problem with the volunteers?	had no idea how to fight. they were all school teachers, farmers and laborers.
what did the volunteers learn in training?	use rifles, tents, weapons, and fighting

how did Lee's choice reflect the division of the states?	he chose the confederate side because he is originally from Virginia which is in the south.
Anaconda Plan:	it's there plan to create a blockade by the water so the south would get less exports.

what did the confederates do when they captured the union's ship?	they turned it to a ironclad and called it Virginia.
did the union have a ironclad?	yes called the Moniter. it was designed by a Swedish engineer named John Ericsson. it includes powerful guns and thick plating.
what happened to the fight over the Moniter and Virginia?	none were seriously damaged, but the union made the confederates withdraw.
