Term | Definition |
Hurricane | A wind system that forms in tropical areas that brings violent storms with heavy rains. Common in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. |
Navigable | Rivers that are wide and deep enough to allow the passage of ships. |
Cordillera | A group of mountain ranges that run side by side. |
megalopolis | A group of urban areas (cities) that are connected or continuous. |
blizzard | A severe winter storm that lasts several hours and combines high winds with heavy snow. |
drought | A long period of time without rainfall. |
glacier | A giant sheet of ice. |
tornado | A windstorm in the form of a funnel-shaped cloud that often touches the ground. |
divide | A high point that determines the direction that rivers flow. |
prairie | A rolling inland grassland with fertile soil which provides good farmland, Great Plains states. |
canyon | A deep valley with steep sides. |
contiguous | States or provinces that are joined together inside a common boundary. |
Rocky Mountains | A range of mountains that are the highest in elevation in the USA. |
Central US | This area has more tornadoes each year than any other place in the world. |
Marine west coast | The type of climate with year-round mind temperatures and lots of rainfall, runs from southern Alaska to northern California. |
