Term | Definition |
Reference Map | mapping that includes all possible valid relationships between a source system and a target system. |
Thematic Map | is a type of map or chart especially designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area. |
GPS | The receiver uses the messages it receives to determine the transit time of each message and computes the distance to each satellite using the speed of light. Each of these distances and satellites' locations defines a sphere. |
GIS | Geographic Information Systems, tools used to gather, transform, manipulate, analyze, and produce information related to the surface of the Earth. This data may exist as maps, 3D virtual models, tables, and/or lists. |
Distance Scale | length scale is a particular length or distance determined with the precision of one order of magnitude. |
Directional Indicator | an instrument that indicates direction of movement, travel |
Inset Map | More detailed (larger scale) representation of a specific area on a map |
Legend | he wording on a map or diagram explaining the symbols used |
Latitude (parallels ) | the angular distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator, or of a celestial object north or south of the celestial equator, usually expressed in degrees and minutes. |
Longitude ( meridians ) | he angular distance of a place east or west of the meridian at Greenwich, England, or west of the standard meridian of a celestial object, usually expressed in degrees and minutes. |
Equator | the angular distance of a place east or west of the meridian at Greenwich, England, or west of the standard meridian |
Prime Meridian | a planet's meridian adopted as the zero of longitude |
Northern hemisphere | he hemisphere that is to the north of the equator |
Southern hemisphere | hemisphere to the south of the equator |
Eastern hemisphere | hemisphere that includes Eurasia and Africa and Australia |
Western hemisphere | hemisphere that includes North America and South America |
Continents | any of the world's main continuous expanses of land (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America). |
Map grid | symbolized network of lines, or graticule, representing parallels and meridians or plane coordinates |
