Term | Definition |
Seismograph | The instrument used to measure the force of an earthquake |
Tsunami | Giant tidal wave caused by an earthquake or volcanic eruption underwater |
Convection Currents | Causes the movement of plates |
Crust | Consists of about 15 plates and is like the skin of the earth |
Continental Drift | The movement of plates |
Fold Mountains | Found where plates collide |
Focus | Center of earthquake beneath the surface |
Epicentre | Point at which earthquake is felt the strongest on the earths surface |
Fault Lines | The point where two plates meet |
Earthquake | A series of seismic waves or tremors in the earth's crust |
Aftershocks | Tremors that occur in the hours or days after the original earthquake |
Richter Scale | This is used to describe the force of the earthquake |
Mantle | Area where magma is stored and is 4000'C |
Core | Center of the earth that consists of hot metals |
Volcano | Caused when two of the earth's plates separate |
Lava | What magma is called when it reaches the earth's surface |
Active | A volcano that erupts frequently |
Dormant | A volcano that has not erupted in a long time, but could possibly still erupt |
Extinct | a volcano that has not erupted in historic times |
Caldera | Formed when ground collapses after a volcanic eruption |
