| Term | Definition |
| By-line | The name of the writer printed at the top of a story. Who the story is by. |
| Caption | The note below a picture, usually explaining what the picture is of or about. |
| Columns | The text in a newspaper is arranged in blocks of horizontal lines. |
| Dateline | The line at the beginning of a story giving the place and date of the reported incident. |
| Five Ws and H | The major questions answered in the lead of a well-written story. |
| Headline | A title over a newspaper article summarising the main point for the reader. |
| Inverted pyramid | A method for writing by placing parts of the story in descending order of importance. |
| Layout | The organisation of all elements of the newspaper on the page. |
| Masthead | The information printed at the top of the newspaper with the name, cost, location, etc. |
