Newspapers

Year 7 English

TermDefinition
By-line The name of the writer printed at the top of a story. Who the story is by.
Caption The note below a picture, usually explaining what the picture is of or about.
Columns The text in a newspaper is arranged in blocks of horizontal lines.
Dateline The line at the beginning of a story giving the place and date of the reported incident.
Five Ws and H The major questions answered in the lead of a well-written story.
Headline A title over a newspaper article summarising the main point for the reader.
Inverted pyramid A method for writing by placing parts of the story in descending order of importance.
Layout The organisation of all elements of the newspaper on the page.
Masthead The information printed at the top of the newspaper with the name, cost, location, etc.
