Term | Definition |
bell's palsy | involves the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) which controls movement of facial muscles. the condition is usually temporary and only on one side of face |
scapular winging | occurs when an injury to the long thoracic nerve weakens or paralyzes the serratus anterior muscle, causing the medial border of the scapula to rise away from the rib cage |
thoracic outlet syndrome | is a group of disorders that occur when the nerves of the brachial plexus and/or the subclavian artery and vein become compressed in the thoracic outlet- the space between the clavicle, and first rib and possibly scalene muscles |
burner or stinger syndrome | can occur following a stretch or compression injury to the brachial plexus from a blow to the head or shoulder. common in football players and wrestlers and gymnasts. symptoms: immediate burning pain, prickly parasthesia radiating from the neck, numbness |
erb's palsy | sometimes known as tip position, is a traction injury to a baby's upper brachial plexus and occurs most commonly during a difficult childbirth. affected arm hangs in shd ext & med rotation, elbow extended, forearm pronated & wrist flexed |
Saturday night palsy | occurs when radial nerve becomes compressed as it spirals around the mid-humerus. name derives from the nature of the injury-the person, often intoxicated, falls asleep with arm over back of a chair |
wrist drop(loss of wrist ext) | weakened ability to release objects (finger ext) will result from a high radial nerve injury, which is often a complication of a mid-humeral fracture |
carpal tunnel syndrome | result of compression on the median nerve as it passes within the carpal tunnel. tunnel formed by transverse carpal ligament superficially & bony floor of carpal bones deep |
cubital tunnel syndrome | similar to carpal, occurs when the ulnar nerve crosses the medial border of the elbow ans the nerve runs thru a bony passageway called the cubital tunnel. when you hit funny bone, u hit ulnar nerve at cubital tunnel |
ape hand | loss of thumb opposition (median nerve injury)named this b/c like apes the person is unable to oppose the thumb |
pope's blessing/hand of benediction | inability to flex the thumb, index, and middle fingers (median nerve) |
claw hand | loss of intrinsic muscles due to ulnar nerve damage |
sciatica | caused by irritation on the sciatic nerve roots, with pain radiating down the back of the leg, caused by compression from herniated lumbar disc |
foot drop | can be caused by damage to the common peroneal nerve. often caused by cast pressure at the head of fibula, where the nerve is quite superficial as it lies over the bony fibular head |
morton's neuroma | enlarged nerve and usually occurs between the 3rd & 4th toes (branches of tibial nerve)could be from wearing high heels or wearing shoe with tight toe box creating compression on nerves as they pass metatarsals |
cervical plexus | made up of C1-C4 spinal nerves, innervates the muscles of the neck |
brachial plexus | made up of C5-T1 innervates muscles of the upper limb |
lumbosacral plexus | made up of L1-S5 innervates muscles of the lower limb |
lumbar portion of lumbosacral plexus | L1-L4 supplies mostly muscles of the thigh |
5 peripheral nerves of bracial plexus | musculocutaneous, axillary, radial, median, ulnar- for the most part they innervate the muscles of the upper limb |
sacral portion of lumbosacral plexus | L5-S3 supplies mostly muscles of the leg and foot |
