Term | Definition |
reference map | shows the location of the geographic areas which display boundaries, names, physical features such as roads, railroads, coastlines, rivers and lakes |
thematic map | a map that emphasizes a particular theme or special topic, example: the average distribution of rainfall in an area |
GPS | Short for Global Positioning System used to determine latitude, longitude, and elevation |
GIS | Short for Geographic Informational System gets hardware, soft, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geography |
inset map | a small map set within a larger map, might show a more detailed, smaller part of the map |
legend | an explanatory table or list of the symbols on a map or chart |
latitude | the angular distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator |
longitude | the angular distance of a place east or west of the meridian |
equator | The imaginary circle around earth's surface, same distance from the poles and perpendicular to the earth's axis. It divides the earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. |
prime meridian | used as a reference line from which longitude east and west is measured |
northern hemisphere | half of earth that is north of the equator |
southern hemisphere | half of earth that is south of the equator |
eastern hemisphere | half of the Earth that is east of the Prime Meridian |
western hemisphere | half of the Earth that lies west of the Prime Meridian |
continents | the seven great landmasses that make up the surface of earth |
