Term | Definition |
Sets | A group of things that have a certain property in common e.g. even numbers 2 4 6 8 10 |
An element | The numbers or objects in a set are called the elements |
Cardinal Number # | This is the number of numbers within a set. For example Set A has 5 numbers{1,2,3,4,5} and Set B has 3 numbers {2,4,6} |
Prime Number | This is any number that can be divided by itself and 1 only. Example {2, 3, 5, ...} |
Null Set | This is a set that has no elements. It is given the symbol {} |
Subset | When given two sets A and B. If all of the elements of B are also in A, then B is said to be a subset of A. Example Set A {1,2,3,4,5,6,7} and Set B {1,2,3,4,5}; B is a subset of A. |
Union of two sets | The set of elements contained in both sets |
Intersection of two sets | The set of elements common to both sets |
Universal Set | The set that contains all elements |
Complement of Set A | List all of the elements of the universal set except set A. In other words, all of the elements outside Set A. |
A\B | This is the set of elements in A but not in B. In other words list A without B. |
