Term | Definition |
Access Copyright | -The Canadian Copyright Licensing Agency -collects revenues from licensed Canadian businesses, government, schools, libraries and copyright users and distributes the money to the holders of the rights. |
Copyright | -The right to copy. -The right that the owner has in relation to how that intellectual property may be used. -"intellectual" property. -Regulated by the Copyright Act |
Intellectual Property | -Do not exist in physical form, but can still have ownership claims. -Lyrics to a song and computer codes. -Include patents, trademarks, industrial designs and integrated circuit topographies. - |
Royalty | -usage based payments made by the licensee to the licensor for the right to ongoing use of an asset, sometimes and intellectual property -typically a percentage of gross or net revenues derived from the use of an asset or a fixed price per unit sold |
Trade-Marks | -Distinguish the goods or services of a person or company from those of another -Slogans, names of products, unique product shapes etc -Word(s), a design or combination of these, used to identify the goods/services of a person/organization |
Public Domain | -works that belong to the public -free of charge -don't require written permission from the creator -can be expired copyrights, ineligible for copyright, authorized for public use by the creator -titles, slogans, short word combinations |
Moral Rights | -Provision in the Copyright Act -Sets out the moral rights of a creator -personal to a creator regardless of who owns copyright |
Performing Rights | -performing rights societies work on behalf of composers, authors and music publishers and administer performing rights in music works |
Plagiarism | - act that directly challenges intellectual honesty -citing sources improperly or using someone elses work as your own |
Fair Dealing | -an exception that permits limited and non commercial copying for specific purposes. -user's right that facilitates creativity and access to information by balancing restrictions in the copyright Act -not an unconditional exemption |
Patent | -Protect new and useful inventions -Processes, equipment, and manufacturing techniques -Do not cover the artistic or aesthetic qualities -A right granted by government, to exclude others from making, using, or selling your invention in Canada |
Blanket License | -allow radio, TV, businesses etc to play music without having to get rights each time. -gives permission of holders of copyrights, composers, songwriters, and publishers in one swoop |
