Term | Definition |
Persona | : A mask or voice through which an author or narrator speaks. |
Subjectivity | : Inclusive of opinion. Denotes the set of standards and principles each individual uses when making sense of information. |
Othering | : Concerns the influence of individual beliefs and opinions. The act of one group or individual making another group or individual appear as different usually for the effect of enhancing a perceived sense of superiority. |
Theme | A telling of events through a narrator's point of view |
Diction | A situation where information from the past is inserted in the midst of a chronologically flowing narrative. |
Tone | A central idea or insight of a literary work. |
Mood | The atmosphere of the work conveyed by the author through language, images and physical setting. |
Narrative | The implied authorial attitude toward the subject matter in a literary work. |
Flashback | The word choice and arrangement used by an author to covey attitudes, accents, tone, intonation, inflections, and other characteristics of speech. |
Setting | A comparison between two objects using "like" or "as" |
Figurative language | A combination of descriptive images presented through use of language techniques to convey ideas, concepts, emotions, or meanings. More specifically, imagery engages our sensory perceptions: sound, sight, smell, taste, touch |
Metaphor | A comparison between an object is compared dissimilar object or idea for the purpose of conveying an unique quality about or expanding our understand of the first object. |
Simile | The time and physical place in which events or actions in literary work take place |
Imagery | The use of language in non-standard or emblematic ways to describe or convey some idea or essence |
Symbol | Recognition of a reality different from actual reality or what is anticipated or expected |
Irony | Use of an object or image to express a meaning beyond the literal one. |
