Term | Definition |
Access Copyright | A non-profit copyright collective that collects revenues from licensed Canadian businesses, government, schools, libraries, etc. for the photocopying of print works. They then distribute the money to the rights holders of the work. |
Copyright | A property right; A right that deals with the rights of the use of one's personal property and the owner's right of how the intellectual property may be used. |
Intellectual Property | Are not tangible and do not exist in physical form, but of which we can still make ownership claims (i.e. lyrics to a song). |
Royalty | Payment to the holder of a patent or copyright or resource for the right to use their property. |
Trade-Marks | used to distinguish the goods or services of one company from another. This includes slogans, names of products, certain packages, or product shapes. |
Public Domain | Works that belong to the public and are free of charge and do not require permission by the owner. |
Moral Rights | The author of the work has the right to the integrity of the work and to be associated with the work as the author by name. |
Performing Rights | The right to perform music in public and to have the right to control and benefit from the performance work. |
Plagiarism | An act that compromises the intellectual property of another person by handing in that person's work as your own or improperly citing. |
Fair Dealing | An action that is legal for the purpose of research, private study, education, parody or satire, criticism or review, and news reporting. |
Patent | Protects "inventions"; processes, equipment, manufacturing techniques but do not cover an object’s artistic or aesthetic qualities. |
Blanket License | A type of license allowing a music user, typically a TV network, or radio station, to play or perform all compositions covered under the license without a limit on use for one (usually annual) payment. |
