Valley | Long, low-laying area usually located between ranges of hills or mountains. |
Canyon | Deep, narrow, steep-sided valley, often with a river on its floor. |
Peninsula | Area of land almost surrounded by water. |
Country | Any independent nation with a name and boundary. |
Island | Land completely surrounded by water. |
Summit | Highest point on a hill or mountain. |
Ethnic Group | A group of people sharing the same origin and lifestyle. |
Rural | Relating to the countryside. |
Arctic | The area at or near the North Pole. |
Tundra | Treeless plain close to or above the Arctic Circle. |
Resource | Substances or materials that people value and use. |
Precipitation | Rain, hail, sleet, snow, and other types of moisture that fall to Earth. |
River | Large amounts of flowing fresh water. |
Cardinal Directions | The four points of a compass indicating north, south, east, and west. |
Arctic Circle | Imaginary line about 66 degrees north of the equator. |
Swamp | Area of land that is very wet year round and in which trees and scrubs grow. |
Latitude | The position of a point on Earth's surface measured in degrees, north and south. |
Mountain | Land that raises higher than the hills and above surrounding area. |
Territory | A region of a country not admitted as a state or province but having its own government. |
Isthmus | Narrow neck of land connecting two larger areas of land. |
Desert | Dry area which receives such a small amount of precipitation that little or no life exists. |
Atoll | Coral reef enclosing a lagoon. |
Basin | Land that is lower than surrounding land. |
Plain | Large area of flat or gently rolling, treeless plain. |
Hill | Land that rises to a summit no more than 1,000 feet above the surrounding area. |
Hemisphere | One half of the Earth. |
Gulf | Large part of the ocean that extends into the land. |
Sea | Part of an ocean that has been identified by geographers as a distinct body of water. |
Climate | All the weather that occurs in an area over a long period of time. |
Volcano | Cone-shaped mountain formed by lava and other materials that have erupted from inside the Earth. |
Coral Reef | A reef composed of coral and animals of which parts have soldified into limestone. |
Prairie | Flat or rolling land with few trees, but covered with grasses. |
Longitude | The distance in degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian. |
Fjord | A long, narrow bay with steep sides, created in a valley carved by a glacier. |
Ocean | Huge areas of salt water. |
Steppe | Large area tah experiences very hot and very cold temperatures and little precipitation, but supports grasses. |
Canal | A man-made waterway used for irrigation and transportation by boat. |
Bay | Area of ocean, sea, or lake that extends in the land. |
Poles | Northern and southern most points on the Earth. |
Archipelago | Islands clustered together. |
Continent | The seven hige land masses. |
Cape | A piece of land extending beyond the rest of the shoreline into the ocean. |
Lake | A body of water surrounded by land. |
Glacier | Huge mass of slowly moving ice. |
Delta | Triangular-shaped area of small islands of sediment that divides a river into smaller parts at its mouth. |
Urban | Relating to cities. |
Plateau | Large area of level land that is higher than surrounding land. |
strait | Narrow body of water that connects two larger bodies of water. |
Savanna | Dry area of flat or rolling land that supports grasses but few trees. |
Tributary | Stream or river that flows into a larger stream or river. |
