types of methods of characterization | direct description by author , a description offered by another character, the character may speaks and act therefore describing him/herself , an author may go into the characters mind and present his/her thoughts |
setting | the time and place of the action of the plot |
three types irony | verbal , situational , dramatic |
verbal irony | occurs when a writer or speaker says one thing and means the exact opposite |
situational irony | occurs when the exact opposite of what a character expects, occurs. |
dramatic irony | involves the reader or audience knowing something about what's happening in the plot, about which the characters have no knowledge. |
allusion | a reference in one work of literature to a well known person ,place or event in another work. |
foil | a character who, by contrast, sets off another character |
protagonist | the leading character in literary work |
antagonist | one who opposes or competes with another |
point of view | the way the author allows you to see and hear what's going on. |
figure of speech | any way of saying something other than the ordinary way. |
imagery | any language that excites the senses |
assonance | the repetition of identical or similar vowel sounds in neighboring words |
alliteration | the repetition of the same first letter or sounds in a group of words. |
symbolism | an object , action or idea that represents something other than itself. |
hyperbole | an identical exaggerated statement often used for dramatic or humorous effect. |
metaphor | a comparison of two unlike things that doesn't use a comparing word-suggesting that one thing is another. |
simile | a comparison of two unlike things which uses the comparing word like or as |
personification | the process of giving human characteristics to an inanimate object or animals |
