Be familiar with Steve’s approach to recording bands.   SMALL/LARGE Bands: Play live together, not particularly in the same room, so that each member can accommodate each others little changes in emphasis and timing

Understand what Steve feels is important when recording drums.   Have a conversation with the drummer and find out what he feels the kit should sound like. Listen closely to what the bass (or drums) sound like.

Understand Steve’s approach to Pianos.   Pair of AT4051s, perpendicular to the harp of the piano, with 1 on the long strings and 1 on the short strings. Neumann SM2 OR, AKG C12/C24, placed in front of the piano looking in on the strings.

Understand Steve’s approach to Electric Guitars   Uses a ribbon, Royer 121, Coles 4038, RCA BK-5/44 and a condenser, Shure SM57, Sennheiser 421/409 on a mic cabinet. Miked further away bc the closer it is, the more acoustic interactions w/ the cabinet are more localized. Gives a coherent cabinet sound

Placed farily cloe in center of spkr, far enough away so that none of spkr excursions run into mic. Not crazy abt DI box, uses 1/2 millisc delay to bring back into phase

Understand Steve’s approach to Acoustic Guitars.   Neumann SM2, Schoeps 221, and at distance the AT ATM 4051, brittle closeup. If singing, try to make the mics not favor the vocal. If not, record at distance. Stereo image from player/audience perspective. Ribbon mic closeup makes thin gtr sound heftier

Understand Steve’s approach to recording vocals.   Uses the Josephson 700, RE20, Just depends on the type of singer and their own vocal delivery.
