1. Finger to Nose | Shoulder abducted to 90 degrees and elbow extended. Ask pt to bring tip of index finger to tip of their nose; alterations: assess performance from different planes of motion...ex up/down

2. Finger to Assistant’s Finger | Sit opposite pt & hold index finger in front of them. Ask pt to touch the tip of PTA's index finger with their index finger; may alternate finger position to change distance , direction & force

3. Finger to Finger | Both shoulders abducted to 90 degrees and elbows extended. Ask pt to bring both hands toward the midline (each other)and touch index fingers

4. Alternate Nose to Finger | Pt touches tip of nose then tip of PTA's finger with their index finger. Position of PTA finger may be altered to assess ability to change distance, direction and force

5. Finger Opposition | Pt touches the tip of the thumb to the tip of each finger in sequence

||||
6. Mass grasp | Alternate opening & closing their fist; speed may gradually be increased.

7. Pronation/Supination | Elbow's flexed to 90 degrees and held close to their body. Alternate palm up/palm down. Can flex shoulders to 90 degrees & extend elbows as alternative. Assess ability to reverse mov't between opposing mm grs ex. flex & exten knee, ankle, elbow & fingers

8. Tapping (hand) | Flex elbow and pronate forearm (palm down). Ask pt to "tap" hand of their knee.

9. Tapping (foot) | Ask pt to "tap" the ball of their foot on the floor without raising their knee; heel stays in contact with the floor.

10. Pointing and Past Pointing | Sit or stand opposite pt. Both bring shoulders to 90 degrees flexion w/elbows extended. Touch index fingers. Ask pt to reach for the ceiling and return to your fingers. Normal is accurate return to start. Abnormal is overshooting or return "past pointing"

11. Alternate Heel to Knee; Heel to Toe | Supine; Ask pt to touch their knee & big toe alternately with heel of the opposite extremity.

12. Toe to Examiner’s Finger | Supine; Ask pt to touch their big toe to the finger of the PTA. The position of the finger may change to assess distance, direction & force of mov't.

13. Heel on Shin | Supine; Ask pt to slide the heel of one extremity up & down the shin of the opposite extremity.

14. Drawing a Circle | Supine(LE) or sitting(UE). Ask pt to draw a circle in the sir with upper or lower extremity. Figure 8 pattern can also be used.

15. Fixation or Position Holding | UE: Ask pt to hold arms horizontally in front of them while sitting or standing. LE: Ask pt to hold knee in extended position while sitting.

How should tests be performed? | First with eyes open then with eyes closed. Vary speed from slow to fast while observing control.

What is an abnormal response? | Abnormal = gradual deviation of the "holding" position &/or a diminished quality of response with vision occluded.
