Your specific purpose should | Use words that refer to observable or measurable behavior, be limited to a single idea, reflect the needs, interests, expectations, and level of knowledge of your audience

A purpose statement should | indicate what the audience should know or be able to do by the end of the speech, and guides the speakers choices throughout the preparation of the speech.

A central Idea however | summarizes the speech, and guides the audience in their understanding of the speech. It should be a complete declarative sentence. It should use direct, specific language, be a single idea and be an audience-centered idea.

When generating main ideas make sure to check that your central idea has | logical divisions, is true for a number of reasons, and can be supported with steps

Four main steps to get you from a blank piece of paper to a speech plan: | Select and narrow your topic, determine your purpose, develop your central idea and then generate your main ideas.

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.
