| GUSTATION | Starts with the physical stimulation of taste receptor cells in the mouth. The stimuli that produce taste sensations are chemical molecules in whatever you eat or drink.

| TASTE RECEPTORS (also known as Gustatory Cells) | The sensory receptors that detect the chemical molecules that enable taste. They are located within taste buds.50-150 Taste Receptors are found in every individual taste bud, Taste receptors have a limited lifespan of 10 days.

| TASTE BUDS | Most are located on the top of the tongue (inside the papillae) with some everywhere else. Humans are born with 8,000-10,000 taste buds (the number peaks in early childhood and then declines during adulthood).

| PAPILLAE | (The small bumps on your tongue) An individual Papilla may hold one or more taste buds

| TASTE PORE | On the surface of the tongue open into the taste bud, thereby connecting the surface of the tongue to the taste receptors within the taste buds.

| TASTANT | The dissolved chemical molecules that can be tasted.

| GUSTATORY CORTEX | A brain structure responsible for the perception of taste. It consists of two substructures: the anterior insula on the insular lobe and the frontal operculum on the inferior frontal gyrus of the frontal lobe.
