What is percolation?   The carbonic acid that falls on the limestone, before before flowing through its cracks and joints. The percolated water dissolves the rock causing it to widen.

The surface features of limestone pavement.   The widening and deepening of the joints for a series of intersecting lines known as grikes. Once a grike develops, more acidic water drains into the cracks causing it to deepen. When the grikes deepen the remaining stone is divided into sections called
