Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres

Gaul is all divided into three parts

quarum unam incolunt Belgae, aliam Aquitani,

of which one the Belgians inhabit, the second the Aquitani,

tertiam qui ipsorum lingua Celtae, nostra Galli appellantur.

and the third a people who in their own language are called the Celts, called by us the Gauls.

Hi omnes lingua, institutis, legibus inter se differunt.

All these people differ amongst themselves in terms of language, institutions, an laws,

Gallos ab Aquitanis Garumna flumen, a Belgis Matrona et Sequana dividit.

The river Garonne divides the Gauls from the Aquitani, and the Marne and Seine from the Belgae.

Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae, propterea quod a cultu atque humanitate provinciae longissime absunt

Of all of these the Belgae are the strongest, because they are the furthest away from the culture and sophistication of the province,

🗑

minimeque ad eos mercatores saepe commeant atque ea quae ad effeminandos animos pertinent important;

and merchants least often travel to them and bring into it things which pertain to weakening spirits;

🗑

proximique sunt Germanis, qui trans Rhenum incolunt, quibuscum continenter bellum gerunt.

And they are nearest to the Germans, who live across the Rhine, with whom they continually wage war.

Qua de causa Helvetii quoque reliquos Gallos virtute praecedunt,

For this reason the Helvetii also surpass the other Gauls in bravery,

🗑

quod fere cotidianis proeliis cum Germanis contendunt,

because nearly every day they fight battles with the Germans,

🗑

cum aut suis finibus eos prohibent aut ipsi in eorum finibus bellum gerunt.

when either they are keeping them out from their own territory or they themselves wage war within their territory
