DEA Number   An identifying number assigned to a health care provider by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration allowing him or her to write prescriptions for controlled substances.

Form DEA 222   A form that must be completed by a pharmacy when ordering Schedule I and II controlled substances from a supplier.

Schedule II   A category of drugs that have the potential to be highly abusive and are accepted for medical purposes, and have potentially severe psychological and physiologic dependence.

Investigational Drug   A drug that has not been approved for general use by the FDA, but is under investigation in clinical trials regarding its safety and effectiveness first by clinical investigators and then by physicians.

Informed Consent   The process of getting permission from the participants before conducting a clinical trial.

Clinical Studies   An experiment or observation completed on human participants to determine the safety and effectiveness of medications, devices, diagnostic products and treatment regimens intended for human use.

Inventory   A complete and accurate list of all stocks and forms of controlled substances in possession.
