Percent composition   Percent by mass of each element present in a compound.

Empirical formula   Simplest positive integer ratio of atoms present in a compound.

Stoichiometry   Measures quantitative relationships, and is used to determine the amount of products/reactants that are produced/needed in a given reaction.

Decomposition   Type of chemical reaction in which a single compound breaks down into two or more elements or new compounds.

Synthesis   Two or more chemical species combine to form a more complex product.

Combustion   Hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water.

Single-displacement   Type of chemical reaction where an element reacts with a compound and takes the place of another element in that compound.

Mole ratio   Ratio of moles of one substance to the moles of another substance in a balanced equation.

Double-displacement   Type of chemical reaction where two compounds react, and the positive ions (cation) and the negative ions (anion) of the two reactants switch places, forming two new compounds or products.

Limiting reactant   Substance that is totally consumed when the chemical reaction is complete.
