| Empirical formula | Simplest positive integer ratio of atoms present in a compound. |
| Stoichiometry | Measures quantitative relationships, and is used to determine the amount of products/reactants that are produced/needed in a given reaction. |
| Decomposition | Type of chemical reaction in which a single compound breaks down into two or more elements or new compounds. |
| Synthesis | Two or more chemical species combine to form a more complex product. |
| Combustion | Hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water. |
| Single-displacement | Type of chemical reaction where an element reacts with a compound and takes the place of another element in that compound. |
| Mole ratio | Ratio of moles of one substance to the moles of another substance in a balanced equation. |
| Double-displacement | Type of chemical reaction where two compounds react, and the positive ions (cation) and the negative ions (anion) of the two reactants switch places, forming two new compounds or products. |
| Limiting reactant | Substance that is totally consumed when the chemical reaction is complete. |
