Question
Answer
divergent plate boudary   divergent plate boundaries occur when two plates move away from eachother
🗑
convergent subduction plate boundary   convergent plate boundary occur what an oceanic plate is forced under a continental plate
🗑
convergent collision plate boundary   collision plate boundaries occur when two continental plates move towards eachother
🗑
conservative plate boundary   conservative plate boundaries is when two plates move side by side
🗑
example of divergent plate boundary   north american and Eurasian plate
🗑
example of convergent subduction plate boundary   pacific plate and the eurasian
🗑
example of convergent collision plate boundary   indo-Australian and the Eurasian plate
🗑
example of conservative plate boundary   north american plate and the pacific plate
🗑
what happens when an oceanic plate meets a continental plate?   oceanic crust is denser than continental crust so the continental crust forces the oceanic crust underneath it. this is a process called subduction. at the subduction zone a deep sea trench is formed where the plate is being forced downwards.
🗑
what happened when a continental plate meets a continental plate?   when continental plate meets a continental plate neither can subduct the other because they both have the same density. the rocks crumble together to make massive mountain chains like the himalayas
🗑
what happens when plates pull apart?   there can never be any gaps on earth so when the plates move apart magma rises from the mantle and solidifies in the space, this happens one the sea floor and it is called sea floor spreading
🗑
what happens when plates slide side by side?   when plates move along side each other in the opposite direction , earth quakes occur, the edges are all jagged, this makes the pressure to build up within the cracks, making really powerful earthquakes
🗑
what are hot spots?   hot spots are not found on plate boundaries, but can be in a middle of a plate. a hot plume rising from the center of the earth melts through the plate above creating a volcano. the plate continues to move over the plume. this creates a line of volcanoes
🗑
how are earthquakes measured?   mercalli scale and Richter scale
🗑
what is the mercalli scale?   it is based of observation, measures the intensity. measured on a scale 1-12, measured by people, you have to be there to measure it
🗑
what is the Richter scale?   is based on accurate measurments, measures the magnitude of an earthquake, measured on a scale from 1-9, measured by a seismograph, you do not have to be there to measure it.
