Absolute Location   The specific location of a place using degrees of longitude and latitude.

Cardinal Directions   The four main directions on a compass; north, south, east, west.

Compass Rose   Indicates the direction on a map.

Enviroment   The surroundings of a place; including: land, water, weather patterns, plants, animals.

Geography   The study of Earth's surfaces and the process that shape it.

Hemisphere   Half of the Earth; Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western.

Intermediate Directions   The directions made by combining two of the cardinal directions; northeast, southeast, northwest, southwest.

Latitude   How far south or north a location is from the Equator is shown by a line of latitude. These are horizontal lines also known as parallels. Separates the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Longitude   How far east or west from the Prime Meridian is shown by a line of longitude. These are vertical lines know as meridians. Separates the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

Map Key   Shows the symbols and colors used on a map and what each one means.

Scale Bar   Is used to calculate the distance between two points on a map.

Six Essential Elements of Geography   A method of categorizing and studying geography. Geographers have divided the study of geography into six essential elements: the world in spatial terms, places and regions, physical systems, human systems, and environment and society.
