| Sulfonamides | Sulfa drugs are oldest antibiotics on market. Used in the treatment of UTIs, otitis media, GI infections, lower respiratory infections, and general infections.

| Penicillins | The drug of choice for streptococcal infections. Penicillin is bactericidal, meaning they kill bacteria by preventing them from forming rigid cell walls (human cells don't have). Antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended for patients with heart problems.

| Cephalosporins | Most widely used antibiotic. They cover a wide range of organisms and have lower toxicity. Carbapenems, carbacephems, and monobactams are beta-lactams.

| Tetracyclines & Tigecycline | Tetracyclines are bateriostatic (used for tick-related diseases). Drug class related to tetracyclines is glycycline. Only one drug is in that class: tigecycline (Tygacil).

| Macrolides | Used to treat pulmonary infections caused by Legionella and gram-positive organisms. Azithromycin (Zithromax, Z-Pak) has been a well know success, mainly due to its short course.
