Equator   Imaginary line that divides the Earth into the northern and southern hemispheres. It runs east to west at 0 degrees.

Prime Meridian   Imaginary line that divides the Earth into the eastern and western hemispheres. It runs north to south from pole to pole at 0 degrees.

Lines of Latitude   Imaginary lines that measure degrees north and south of Equator.

Lines of Longitude   Imaginary lines that measure degrees east and west of the Prime Meridian.

Tropic of Cancer   Line of Latitude at approximately 23.5 degrees North of the Equator.

Tropic of Capricorn   Line of Latitude at approximately 23.5 degrees South of the Equator.

Scale   Part of a map that shows relative distances. For example, on a given map one inch on the map may mean 100 miles on the Earth.

Legend   Part of a map that explains what different symbols means.

Compass Rose   Part of the map that shows directions. Always includes the four cardinal directions, North, South, East, and West. May also include intermediate directions, such as northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest.
