Developed Countries   a wealthy country with an advanced economy. Developed countries have many industries and provide a comfortable way of life for most of their people.   Countries like the US and Canada are developed countries.

Developing Countries   a poorer country with a less advanced economy. In general, developing countries are trying to increase their industries and improve life for their people.   Countries like Mexico and India are developing countries.

GDP   the total value of goods and services produced in a country in a year.   One may infer that in developed countries the GDP is higher.

Per Capita   by or for each person. A per capita figure is calculated by dividing the total amount of something by the number of people in a place.   Per capita means per person.

Calories   a measure of the amount of energy in food.   Developed countries consume more calories than developing countries.

Fossil Fuel   any fuel, such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas, that is made from the remains of prehistoric plants and animals.   We must be conservative with fossil fuels because they are nonrenewable resources.

Digital Divide   the difference in opportunities available to people who have access to computers and the Internet and those who do not.   Developing countries have digital divides, meaning many people there don’t have technology.

Recycling   the process of collecting used materials that would otherwise be thrown away and turning them into raw materials for new uses.   Recycling saves materials that would otherwise be thrown out.
