| Bay | part of a large body of water that extends into a shoreline,generally smaller than a gulf |
| Channel | wide strait or waterway between two landmasses that lie close to each other; deep part of a river or other waterway |
| Highland climate | cool or cold climate that varies with elevation (like high up in themountains) |
| High-latitude climate | cold climate lies from 60 degrees north to the north pole and from 60 degrees south to the south pole |
| tropical climate | warm year round extends from the equator to the tropic of cancer (23 1/2 degrees north) and the tropic of capricorn (23 1/2 degrees south) |
| Midlatitude climate | temperate climate (think seasons) etend from 23 1/2 degress north to 60 degrees north and from 23 1/2 degrees south to 60 degrees south |
| prevailing wind | movements of air that travel around the earth in a typical pattern |
| El nino | caused by the combination of temperature wind and water formed when cold winds from the north are weak Paccific ocean gets warmer occurs every 3 years |
| La Nina | Eastern winds become strong and the opposite of el nino occurs-Pacific Ocean gets cooler |
| elevation | height of land above sea level |
| gulf | part of a large body of water that extends into a shoreline, generally larger and more deeply indented than a bay |
| harbor | a sheltered place along a shoreline where ships can anchor safely |
| lake | a sizable inland body of water |
| Island | land area, smaller than a continent surrounded by water |
| river | large natural stream of water that runs through the land |
| ocean | one of the four major bodies of salt water that surround the continents |
| plateau | area of flat or rolling land at a high elevation, about 300 to 3000 feet high |
| peninsula | body of land jutting intoa lake or ocean surrounded on three sides by water |
| plains | aree of level land, usually at low elevation and often covered with grasses |
| valley | area of low land between hills or mountains |
| volcano | mountain created as liquid rock and ash erupt from inside the earth |
| mountain | land with steep sides that rises sharply (100 feet or more) from surrounding land; generally larger and more rugged than a hill |
| mountain range | a series of connected mountains |
| sea | large body of water completely or partly surrounded by land |
| strait | narrow stretch of water joining two larger bodies of water |
| tropics | low-latitude region between the tropic of cancer and the tropic of capricorn |
| typhoon | name for hurricane in asia |
| hurricane | eviolent tropical storm with high winds and heavy rains |
| tornado | funnel shaped windstorm that sometimes forms during a severe thunderstorm |
| dry climate | drt or partially dry areas that recieve little or no rainfall |
| climate | usual, predictable pattern of weather in an area over a long period of time |
| current | moving streams of water in the world's oceans which afgfect the climate of land areas |
| drought | long period of extreme drness and water shortages |
| landforms | individual features of land |
| weather | unpredictable changes in the air that take place over a short period of tiem |
| monsoon | seasonal wind that blows over a continent for moths at atime |
| physical feature | characteristic of a place occuring naturally, suchg as a landform body of water climate pattern or resource |
