Geographic Regions of the Continental US

Geographic RegionDescription
Coastal Plain/Gulf Plain/Atlantic Plain Located along the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico; Broad lowland providing many excellent harbors
Appalachian Highlands/Mountains Located west of Coastal Plain extending from eastern Canada to western Alabama; located east of the Great Plains/Interior Plains
Canadian Shield Wrapped around Hudson Bay in a horseshoe shape
Interior Lowlands/Great Plains/Central Plains Located west of the Appalachian Mountains and east of the Rocky Mountains
Rocky Mountains Rugged mountains stretching from Alaska almost to Mexico; high elevations
Coastal Range/Pacific Coast Rugged mountains along the Pacific Coast that stretch from California to Canada; next to the Pacific Ocean
Ozark Highlands/Mountains Extend across southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas into eastern Kansas
Basin and Range/Intermountain Region Located west of Rocky Mountains and east of the Sierra Nevadas and the Cascades; area of varying elevations containing isolated mountain ranges and Death Valley, the lowest point in North America
