Geographic Regions of the Continental US
| Geographic Region | Description |

| Coastal Plain/Gulf Plain/Atlantic Plain | Located along the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico; Broad lowland providing many excellent harbors |
| Appalachian Highlands/Mountains | Located west of Coastal Plain extending from eastern Canada to western Alabama; located east of the Great Plains/Interior Plains |
| Canadian Shield | Wrapped around Hudson Bay in a horseshoe shape |
| Interior Lowlands/Great Plains/Central Plains | Located west of the Appalachian Mountains and east of the Rocky Mountains |
| Rocky Mountains | Rugged mountains stretching from Alaska almost to Mexico; high elevations |
| Coastal Range/Pacific Coast | Rugged mountains along the Pacific Coast that stretch from California to Canada; next to the Pacific Ocean |
| Ozark Highlands/Mountains | Extend across southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas into eastern Kansas |
| Basin and Range/Intermountain Region | Located west of Rocky Mountains and east of the Sierra Nevadas and the Cascades; area of varying elevations containing isolated mountain ranges and Death Valley, the lowest point in North America |
