| Oceans | the four largest bodies of water |
| Continents | the seven largest land areas on Earth |
| Hemisphere | half of the globe when it is divided into either Northern/Southern or Western/Eastern |
| Compass Rose | a drawing on a map that shows the cardinal directions to help people use the map |
| Cardinal Directions | the main directions: North, South, East, West |
| Intermediate Directions | the directions between the cardinal directions (northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest) |
| Longitude Lines | imaginary lines that travel north and south around the globe |
| Latitude Lines | imaginary lines that travel east and west around the globe |
| Equator | an imaginary line that circles the globe halfway between the Northern and Southern hemisphere |
| Prime Meridian | an imaginary line that circles the globe halfway between the Eastern and Western hemispheres |
| Map Key | a boxed in area on a map that explains the symbols used on a map (also called a legend) |
| Scale | used to help show the distance between places on a map |
| Border | a line on a map that shows where a state or nation ends |
