Plates

QuestionAnswer
Whats a plate A plate is a section of earths crust
Plate boundary An area where two plates meet. These areas also host the most volcanic eruptions and earthquakes
How thick is a continental and oceanic crust A continental crust is around 30 - 70km thick while an oceanic crust is 5 - 7km thick
What’s pangea Pangea is a supercontinent 200 million years ago. It was when all 7 continents where joined together
Who first thought of the plate tectonic theory and how did he believe they moved Alfred Wegenar thought of the plates tectonic theory and believed they moved through continental drift though he couldn’t explain how they moved
When did continents reach their modern state Around 65 million years ago
What’s the sea floor spreading theory It’s the theory that continents move through convection currents caused by the earths mantle. The theory was developed in the 1960s
How thick are all the layers of earth. Crust 5 - 70km , mantle 2,900km , outer core 2,200km inner core , 1200 - 1270km
What’s a constructive plate boundary. It’s when two plates move apart. This causes new land to be made and gentle volcanic eruptions
What’s a colliding plate boundary. It’s when two continental plates collide. This causes earthquakes and formation of mountains
What’s a destructive plate boundary. It’s when an oceanic and a continental plate collide. The oceanic plates sinks (this is called subduction) this causes the oceanic plate to melt causing violent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
What’s a sliding plate boundary. It’s when two plates move in different speeds or directions while sliding against each other. This causes earthquakes.
