TermDefinition
Archipelago A group or chain of islands.
Climate A weather pattern over a long period of time
Compass Rose A pointer for cardinal directions; north, east, south, west
Delta Triangle shaped area of land at the mouth of a river
Desert Very dry, barren land without trees, lots of sand.
Distribution Map A map that shows patterns of something spread over an area.
Elevation Altitude; height above sea level (mountains)
Equator Imaginary line of latitude; parallel that divides Earth into the northern and southern hemispheres
Geography Relationship between physical features, climate, and people
Hemisphere Half of a sphere; northern, southern, separated by the Equator, and eastern, western separated by the Prime Meridian.
Map Key Legend; explains symbols on a map.
Latitude Imaginary lines on Earth that measures distance north and south of the Equator; expressed in degrees (run east and west).
Longitude Imaginary lines on Earth that measure distance east and west of the Prime Meridian; expressed in degrees (run north and south).
Meridians Lines of longitude.
Non-Renewable Resources Natural Resources which cannot easily be replaced or never be replaced once used. Ex: fossil fuels – coal, petroleum (oil) natural gas
Physical map Map that shows landforms and bodies of water.
Polar Zones Highest latitudes north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle, usually cold and dry.
Political Map Map that shows borders of countries/states/provinces within a continent or country.
Prime Meridian Imaginary line of longitude on Earth; divides Earth into Eastern and Western hemispheres.
Renewable Resources Natural Resources that can be used again and again. Ex: solar energy, wind, water.
Scale Allows an estimate of real distances on Earth.
Temperate Zones Middle latitudes; hot summers and cold winders; between 23.5° and 66.5° latitude.
Tropical Zone Areas of Earth between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn; in the low latitudes; hot most of the year.
Weather Atmospheric conditions which are seen in the environment over a short period of time.
