Waves/erosion
Flash cards containing definitions for terminology about waves/tides + erosion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Abrasion | The waves pick up rocks from the sea and through them against other rocks or cliff faces. Over time this rubs against them and wears them down like sandpaper. |
| Attrition | The sea picks up angular rocks and knocks them against each other. This chips away the corners to make them rounder. |
| Solution | Salts or chemicals in the water act to dissolve the rocks they touch. |
| Hydraulic action | The power of the wave forces rocks and air in to the cracks in the rock. This pressure forces cracks in the rock to split apart. Over time this creates faults and notches which get bigger. |
| Swash | The movement of sea water that goes up the beach after a wave breaks |
| Backwash | The movement of sea water that goes down the beach after a wave breaks |
| Constructive wave | A gentle wave that deposits sediment on a beach . |
| Destructive wave | A powerful wave that removes sediment from a beach. |
| Erosion | The process of rock being worn down over time. |
| Deposition | The process of material being moved and dropped by a moving force e.g.. water, wind. |
| Fetch | A large distance of open water where wind flows in only one direction. |
