Landforms

Basin A broad, flat area surrounded by hills or mountains
Bay A small area of ocean partly surrounded by land
Canal A man-made waterway for transportation or irrigation
Canyon A narrow valley with high, steep sides
Channel A narrow waterway connecting two bodies of water
Delta A land deposit at a river's mouth
Gulf A large body of water partly surrounded by land
Harbor A sheltered area along a seacoast where ships can anchor
Island Land completely surrounded by water
Isthmus A narrow strip of land connecting two larger land areas
Lake A large body of water completely surrounded by land
Marsh Low wet land
Mesa A flat-topped hill with steep sides; common in deserts
Peak The pointed top of a mountain
Peninsula Land surrounded by water on three sides
Plain A large area of flat or gently rolling land
Plateau An area of high flat land
Reservoir A man-made lake for storing water
Stream A small body of flowing water
Tributary A stream that flows into a larger river
Map Flat representation of Earth
Globe a three-dimensional, or spherical representation of Earth
Title Tells teh subject of the map or globe
Symbols represent information such as naturla resources and economic activities
labels names of palces, such as cities, countries, rivers, and mountains
Lines of Latitude imaginary horizontal lines that measure the distance north or south of the equator
Lines of Longitude imaginary vertical lines that measure the distance east or west of the prime meridian
scale shows how much distance on Earth is represented by distance on the map or globe.
legend explains what the symbols and colors on the map or globe represent
compass rose shows the directions north, south, east and west
equator an imaginary circle around Earth that is the same distance from the North and South Poles and divides Earth in half
prime meridian the line of 0 degrees longitude that runs from the North to the South Pole and passes through Greenwich, England
North Pole the northernmost point on Earth, opposite the South Pole, where all lines of longitude meet
South Pole the southernmost point on Earth, opposite the North Pole, where all lines of longitude meet
Western Hemisphere the half of Earth west of the prime meridian
Eastern Hemisphere the half of Earth east of the prime meridian
Northern Hemisphere the half of Earth north of the equator
Southern Hemisphere the half of Earth south of the equator
