| Buttress Roots | Large, wide roots, support tall trees in shallow soil lacking nutrients |
| Canopy | A roof of tree branches and leaves high up that stops sunlight getting to ground and smaller plants. Usually bear fruit all year. |
| Climate | Temperature, wind, humidity, snow, rain - weather patterns over time in a place. |
| Deforestation | Widespread clearing of trees, often to make space for building or farming (plantation) |
| Emergent layer | Tall trees that stand out above the canopy. Only strongest tees are emergent - they compete for sunlight. |
| Fertile | Soil allows plants to grow |
| Forest floor | Not much sunlight due to taller trees. Plants die quickly. |
| Humid | High level of water vapour in the air |
| Lianas | Woody climbing plants that hang from trees |
| Organisms | Living things, e.g. plants or animals |
| Plantation | Large are of land where crops are grown |
| Precipitation | Water falling from the clouds (rain, snow, hail) |
| Shrub layer | Mainly bushes and contains orchids (they use water from forest floor) |
| Terrain | Features of the surface of a piece of land (e.g. hilly, flat) |
| Understorey | Tangle of shrubs, young trees, palms, vines. Hot and damp, air is very still. |
| Weather | Day-to day temperature, precipitation, wind |
