Key Vocab

TermDefinition
Buttress Roots Large, wide roots, support tall trees in shallow soil lacking nutrients
Canopy A roof of tree branches and leaves high up that stops sunlight getting to ground and smaller plants. Usually bear fruit all year.
Climate Temperature, wind, humidity, snow, rain - weather patterns over time in a place.
Deforestation Widespread clearing of trees, often to make space for building or farming (plantation)
Emergent layer Tall trees that stand out above the canopy. Only strongest tees are emergent - they compete for sunlight.
Fertile Soil allows plants to grow
Forest floor Not much sunlight due to taller trees. Plants die quickly.
Humid High level of water vapour in the air
Lianas Woody climbing plants that hang from trees
Organisms Living things, e.g. plants or animals
Plantation Large are of land where crops are grown
Precipitation Water falling from the clouds (rain, snow, hail)
Shrub layer Mainly bushes and contains orchids (they use water from forest floor)
Terrain Features of the surface of a piece of land (e.g. hilly, flat)
Understorey Tangle of shrubs, young trees, palms, vines. Hot and damp, air is very still.
Weather Day-to day temperature, precipitation, wind
