fjord a long, narrow, deep sea inlet with steep, often rocky, sides, formed by a glacier eroding a valley and then being flooded by seawater after the glacier retreats
uplands elevated areas of land, often including hills, terraces, or low mountains, located at a higher elevation than surrounding lowlands or coastal areas
meseta a high, flat, interior plateau, often surrounded by mountains
Massif Central a large, mountainous plateau region in south-central France, covering about one-sixth of the country, characterized by volcanic activity and ancient crystalline rocks
peat a dark brown, fibrous material formed by the partial decomposition of organic matter, particularly plants like sphagnum moss, in wet, oxygen-deficient areas such as bogs or swamps
North Atlantic Drift a warm, powerful ocean current that flows northeast from the Gulf Stream towards northwestern Europe
sirocco a hot, dry, and dusty wind originating in the Sahara Desert that blows across the Mediterranean Sea and into southern Europe, often causing storms and raising temperatures
mistral a strong, cold, dry, and northerly wind that blows from southern France and neighboring regions towards the Mediterranean Sea, particularly during winter and spring
dike a barrier, often earthen, used to regulate or hold back water, typically from a river, lake, or ocean
polder a low-lying tract of land, often reclaimed from a body of water like the sea or a lake, and enclosed by dikes or embankments for flood control and water management
seaworks structures and engineering projects designed to manage or interact with the sea, often for protection, navigation, or resource utilization
terpen an artificial mound built to protect prehistoric settlements from flooding
Zuider Zee a shallow bay of the North Sea that was once part of the Netherlands
Ijsselmeer a shallow, freshwater lake in the central Netherlands, formed by damming off the southern part of the former Zuiderzee (a saltwater inlet of the North Sea) in 1932
