| Term | Definition |

| Latitude | imaginary horizontal lines running across the earth to measure distance from the equator |
| Longitude | imaginary vertical lines running across the earth to measure the distance from the Prime Meridian |
| Prime Meridian | imaginary line that runs up and down the middle of the Earth and divides it east and west |
| Equator | imaginary line that runs along the middle of the Earth and divides it north and south |
| Parallels | Latitude |
| Meridian | Longitude |
| Compass Rose | shows the direction, from any given point on the map, of north, south, east, and west |
| Map Key | a table or segment of a map that contains a list of the symbols, icons, and colors used on the map and their meanings |
| Map Scale | tells you how big or small the map is compared with the actual area it represents |
| cardinal Directions | north (N), south (S), east (E), west (W) |
| intermediate directions | northeast (NE), southeast (SE), southwest (SW), northwest (NW) |
| inset map | smaller map featured on the same page as the main map |
| map title | tells what the map is about, revealing the map’s purpose and content |
| Grid | north-south and east-west lines on a map that intersect to form a pattern of squares |
