Urban Sprawl

urban fringe A ring of small towns and suburbs that surround a big city
urban sprawl Rapid and often poorly planned spread of cities and suburbs
gentrification Replacing old run-down neighborhoods with new types of construction
rural fringe the small towns, farms, and open spaces that lie just beyond a city’s suburbs
suburb A developed area at the edge of a city that is mainly homes
metropolitan area A major population center made up of a large city and the smaller suburbs and towns that surround it
mixed-use developments Development that combines housing and businesses in one area
urban core The older part of a big city that often serves as the downtown or central business district
infill Filling in empty or run-down parts of a city with new development
urban growth boundaries A legal border that separates urban land from rural land
