| subregion | a smaller part of a region |
| fall line | the area where waterfalls flow from higher to lower ground |
| hurricane | a ocean storm with strong winds and heavy rains |
| lock | gated passageway used to raise or lower boats in a waterway |
| tributary | a small river that flows into a larger river |
| levee | raised riverbank used to control flooding |
| coastal plain | the flat, lowland area along a coast |
| indigenous | people who are believed to be the first people to settle an area |
| colonist | people who are sent to live in a new place and claim land for their home country |
| agriculture | Growing crops and raising livestock to sell |
| isolated | being alone or separated from others |
| industry | making products to sell, is called industry |
| metropolitan area | having to do with a large city; an area that includes a city and its surrounding suburbs |
| tourism | business provides services to people who are traveling for enjoyment |
| revenue | income generated by a business |
| civil rights | basic rights that belong to all citizens |
