hurricane a ocean storm with strong winds and heavy rains
lock gated passageway used to raise or lower boats in a waterway
tributary a small river that flows into a larger river
levee raised riverbank used to control flooding
coastal plain the flat, lowland area along a coast
indigenous people who are believed to be the first people to settle an area
colonist people who are sent to live in a new place and claim land for their home country
agriculture Growing crops and raising livestock to sell
isolated being alone or separated from others
industry making products to sell, is called industry
metropolitan area having to do with a large city; an area that includes a city and its surrounding suburbs
tourism business provides services to people who are traveling for enjoyment
revenue income generated by a business
civil rights basic rights that belong to all citizens
