Geography Unit 1

Vocabulary Practice

QuestionAnswer
Equator A line that splits the earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. It runs east to west
Longitude Lines that measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian. Also called meridians, They run north to south but they measure the distance east or west.
Latitude Lines that measure the distance north or south of the equator. Also called parallels.
Map Projections a method for representing part of the surface of the earth or a celestial sphere on a plane surface
Mercator Common map projection, originally designed for ship navigation
Polar Map projection used by pilots, shows the great circle route around the curve of the earth
Robinson Map projection often used in classrooms for thematic maps
General Reference A type of map that shows political and physical features
Legend/Key A part of the map that explains the symbols and colors used
Field Work Research not conducted in an office or laboratory, can include interviews, surveying, photography, etc
Hemisphere A half of the earth's sphere, there are 4 of these
Compass Rose Part of the map that shows the orientation (i.e. direction)
Distortion misrepresentation of the size or shape of an area of land on a map.
Political Map type of map that shows countries, counties, and cities, shows boundaries of countries and states
Physical Map type of map that shows natural features such as rivers or mountains
Topographic Map type of map used to show elevation (not a contour map!)
Contour Map type of map that shows elevation using wiggly lines
Atlas a book of maps or charts
Prime Meridian This line splits the earth into Eastern and Western Hemispheres It is the line of 0° longitude
Satellite images Geography tool used to show change over time
Thematic Map type of map about a particular subject or topic. Examples are language, population, and climate maps
