Earthquakes

GillExplore Geography - Cyclone Chapter 3

TermDefinition
Focus The place where an earthquake begins beneath the earth's surface.
Shock Waves Also called 'seismics waves'. These spread out in circles from the focus.
Epicentre The point at the earth's surface that is directly above the focus of the earthquake. The strength of the earthquake is greatest here.
Fault A large crack in the earth's crust.
An earthquake Is the sudden shaking of the earth caused by the movement of the earth's crust.
Seismologists Scientists who study earthquakes.
Tsunami A huge tidal wave that moves quickly towards the shore.
The San Andreas Fault A large crack in the earth's crust which marks part of a plate boundary.
Seismograph The instrument used to measure and record an earthquake and how long it lasted.
Richter scale Used to measure the magnitude of an earthquake from 1-8
Moment magnitude scale Used to measure the magnitude of the earthquake from 1-10.
