| Term | Definition |

| Focus | The place where an earthquake begins beneath the earth's surface. |
| Shock Waves | Also called 'seismics waves'. These spread out in circles from the focus. |
| Epicentre | The point at the earth's surface that is directly above the focus of the earthquake. The strength of the earthquake is greatest here. |
| Fault | A large crack in the earth's crust. |
| An earthquake | Is the sudden shaking of the earth caused by the movement of the earth's crust. |
| Seismologists | Scientists who study earthquakes. |
| Tsunami | A huge tidal wave that moves quickly towards the shore. |
| The San Andreas Fault | A large crack in the earth's crust which marks part of a plate boundary. |
| Seismograph | The instrument used to measure and record an earthquake and how long it lasted. |
| Richter scale | Used to measure the magnitude of an earthquake from 1-8 |
| Moment magnitude scale | Used to measure the magnitude of the earthquake from 1-10. |
