Year 8 Coastal processes for Term 3

| Wave | A splash of water which is blown up by wind |
| What are waves caused by? | By the wind dragging on the surface of the water |
| Tides | The rise and fall of sea levels caused |
| What are tides caused by? | By the gravitational forces of the moon, sun and of the rotation of the Earth |
| Low tide | Lowest point of a sea point |
| High tide | Highest point f a sea point |
| Crest | Highest point of a wave |
| Trough | Lowest point of a wave |
| Size of waves depend on what? | Strength of wave How long wind blows |
| Longshore drift | Movement of sediments in a zig-zag pattern up and down the shore |
| Swash | Movement of water up the beach and away from the sea as a wave reaches the shore |
| Backwash | Movement of water back towards the sea after a wave has broken |
| Constructive wave | When swash is stronger than backwash and build up the beaches. Happens in the summer |
| Destructive wave | When backwash is stronger than the swash and destroys beaches. Happens in the winter |
