What are the features of the upper course of a river? -v shaped valley -interlocking spurs -waterfalls
What are the features of the middle course of a river? -meanders -wide valleys
What are the features of the lower course of a river? -ox bow lakes -flood plains -deltas -levees
What is hydraulic action? power of the moving water erodes the bed and banks of the river
What is abrasion? broken material (from hydraulic action) carried by river (known as load) is thrown against bed and banks of river. Wears bed and banks further
What is attrition? load itself broken down further as particles bounce off each other and become smooth and rounded
What is solution? water dissolves some of the minerals
What is traction? large pebbles and stones rolled along river bed by force of moving water
What is saltation? small pebbles bounced along river bed
What is suspension? small particles held up in water - movement of river is fast enough for them not to drop to bed
What is solution? rocks dissolved in water by weak acids
