What is urbanisation? Movement of people moving to towns + cities. Centres for merchants + traders etc. Rate of growth varied in different places
What are the consequences of urbanisation? More land needed greatest change from rural to urban land - called an Urban Sprawl. Cities can merge called a conurbation.
Pull factors - drive people towards cities. Decrease in quality of ag land, Poverty ,Lack of medical services/ educational opportunities ,War, Famine – lack of food/crop failure, Natural disasters
Push Factors - push people away from rural areas Job opportunities, Better housing, Infrastructure, Political/religious freedom, Improved ed, Healthcare, Public facilities , Family links
Ecological footprint Amount productive land needed by each person. Measured in hectares per person per year
Sustainable City City designed to reduce environmental impact, Minimising energy use + water use etc. , Environment- air quality etc. ,Quality of life- health etc. ,Resilience – ability to change.
Liveable City Assessment of the quality of life in a particular place, living comfortably, Pleasant location
Planning for a sustainable city Minimise energy + water use, and waste production, Overcome inadequate housing, urban sprawl, air + water pollution etc.
