Population grows at 1.6% a year said to reach 2billion by 2040
Population is distributed unevenly. Lower plains of the Ganges, coastline and major cities are the most populated. 800 perkm2
Fewer people live in areas around Deccan Plateau or Himalayan mountains due to the terrain
Dynamics India is in the early expanding stage (stage 2). High birth rate, but due to healthcare improvements, death rate has fallen to 6per 1000
in 1970's Government introduced incentives to reduce birth rate. eg Men who had a vasectomy were given a transistor radio
Most people still live on farms and often want large families to work the land
